A Brief Biography of Ahmad Sukarno



 Ahmad Sukarno (in English: Sukarno) was an Indonesian leader and political figure born in the city of Surabaya, Indonesia, on July 6, 1901. He showed great interest in politics and ruled the country from 1949 to 1965. He dedicated his life to achieving the country’s independence, freeing it from occupation, establishing the modern Indonesian Republic, and unifying the country under democratic rule. He remained in power until he passed away in Jakarta on June 21, 1970.

Ahmad Sukarno grew up in the city of Surabaya, Indonesia, and attended schools in the city. He showed remarkable proficiency in learning languages, mastering Balinese, Javanese, Sundanese, modern Indonesian, English, Dutch, French, German, and Arabic, which he learned through reading the Quran. He earned a degree in civil engineering in 1927.

Sukarno met with several national politicians, showing interest in politics and parties, and began delivering political speeches that led to his imprisonment by the Dutch in 1929. He remained in prison for two years, then in exile for several years, before being released by the Japanese after they entered the country. After Japan’s defeat in the war, Indonesians elected Sukarno as the country’s president. He became the president of the new Indonesian Republic and remained in office for a period before stepping down. He passed away a few years later at the age of 69.

Major Achievements of Ahmad Sukarno

Ahmad Sukarno managed, after great efforts, to take control of Indonesia after overcoming Dutch colonialism. He declared the country’s independence and became the first president of the new Indonesian Republic. He sought to unify the different national groups in the country and led the Indonesian people in resisting Dutch attempts to reoccupy the country through diplomatic and military means. He eventually forced the Dutch to recognize independence in 1949. Additionally, Sukarno worked hard to achieve stability and end rebellion in the country by establishing an autocratic system known as Guided Democracy.
